Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky revolutionized our understanding of human decision-making by documenting systematic biases in how people think. Their research showed that humans rely on mental shortcuts (heuristics) that are often useful but predictably lead to errors: we overweight vivid examples (availability bias), anchor on irrelevant numbers, and feel losses more acutely than equivalent gains (loss aversion).
Kahneman's dual-process theory distinguishes between System 1 (fast, intuitive, automatic) and System 2 (slow, deliberate, effortful). Most moral judgments happen in System 1 — which is why we can be confident and wrong at the same time. Their work doesn't tell us what to believe, but it warns us about the machinery doing the believing.
The implications for ethics are significant: if our intuitive moral judgments are distorted by availability, by how questions are framed, by who is salient versus who is statistical, then we cannot simply trust those judgments to be reliable guides. Honest moral reasoning requires awareness of the specific ways our cognitive shortcuts misfire — and this is not merely a psychological observation but a moral demand for intellectual honesty.

Kahneman and Tversky began their collaboration in Israel in the late 1960s, initially studying the statistical intuitions of expert statisticians and finding them surprisingly poor. Their work developed during the height of rational-actor economic theory, which assumed that humans were approximately rational maximizers of expected utility. Their experimental findings systematically demolished this assumption and founded the field of behavioral economics.
